Letting an app install other apps on Android TV

Android TV refuses to install anything from outside the Play Store until you approve the app doing the installing. Here that app is Simple Downloader. The approval applies to it alone and leaves the rest of the TV as it was.

Try these in order and stop when one works. On most TVs the first is enough.
1

Use the warning itself

The blocked install produces a warning with a Settings button. Press it. In the app list that follows, switch on Simple Downloader, then press back. The install picks up where it stopped.

2

Go through Settings

No warning on screen? The same list is in Settings, though TV makers file it in different places. One of these will be right:

Settings → Apps → Security & restrictions → Unknown sources
Settings → Device Preferences → Security & restrictions → Unknown sources
Settings → Apps → Special app access → Install unknown apps

A search field in Settings saves the hunt: search for unknown.

3

Switch on developer options

This is for devices where the list is absent, lacks your app, or has a switch that won't stay on. Chromecast with Google TV and the Google TV Streamer are the usual cases; older Android TV sets rarely need it.

In Settings, open About. Google TV puts it under System, older Android TV under Device Preferences, and some brands in the top-level list.

Go to the last entry, Android TV OS build (or Build), and press OK seven times. Part-way through, the TV starts counting down the presses left; at the end it tells you that you are a developer.

Return to way 1 or way 2. The switch now exists.

Is it risky?

No more than using any app store other than Google's, which rely on the same Android feature. Only the one app gets the right to install, Play Protect continues to scan the TV, and you can withdraw the permission as soon as Crictime is installed.
